  • due this Wednesday!

Construction Test

  • will be this Friday!

Friday, October 8, 2010

Constructions for Dummies

  • this is worth a 100 points

  • due next Wednesday

  • must include the following as chapters:

  • Chapter 1: how to duplicate a segment
  • Chapter 2: how to duplicate an angle
  • Chapter 3: how to construct a perpendicular bisector of a segment
  • Chapter 4: how to construct the angle bisector of an angle
  • Chapter 5: how to construct a parallel line given a line (I have not taught this yet)
  • Chapter 6: how to construct an equilateral triangle or 60 degree angle (I have not taught this yet)
  • Chapter 7: how to construct a perpendicular through a point NOT on a line
  • Chapter 8: how to construct a perpendicular through a point ON a line
  • Chapter 9: how to construct a median of a triangle
  • Chapter 10: how to construct the circumcenter (3 perpendicular bisectors) of a triangle
  • Chapter 11: how to construct the incenter (3 angle bisectors) of a triangle
  • Chapter 12: how to construct the centroid (3 medians) of a triangle
  • Chapter 13: how to construct the orthocenter (3 altitdues) of a triangle
  • Chapter 14: how to circumscribe a circle about a triangle
  • Chapter 15: how to inscribe a circle in a triangle
  • your book must include a title page that contains the author's name and period
  • must include a Table of Contents
  • you must give detailed step-by-step instructions on HOW to perform the constructions. You are creating a Construction Book for Dummies....that means you assume the reader (me, Ms. Chan) knows nothing about constructions. I bought your book to teach myself. Your step-by-step directions should make it very easy for me to learn these constructions. These directions need to be typed. 12 point font, Times New Roman.
  • Obviously, you will need to perform the construction on your paper yourself.
  • Neatness counts
  • If you add color, your chances of getting a better grade will improve.
  • The more you creative you are, the better your book will sell.....
  • you should be able to knock out most of these chapters over the weekend.
  • Practice, practice, practice the constructions before you actually add it to your paper with the directions so that everything is nice and neat!

Construction Practice

  1. top half: draw a line segment. label it AB. construct the perpendicular bisector of segment AB.
  2. bottom half: draw an angle. label it A. construct the angle bisector of angle A.
  3. back of paper: draw a medium sized acute triangle in the middle of your paper. label it triangle ABC. construct the perpendicular bisector segment AB. construct the perpendicular bisector of segment BC. construct the perpendicular bisector of AC.
  4. front side of 2nd paper: draw a medium sized OBTUSE triangle in the middle of your paper. label it triangle DEF (make angle D the obtuse angle). construct the perpendicular bisector segment DE. construct the perpendicular bisector of segment EF. construct the perpendicular bisector of DC.
  5. back of paper: draw a medium sized acute triangle in the middle of your paper. label it triangle GHI. construct the angle bisector of angle G. construct the angle bisector of anlge H. construct the angle bisector of angle I.
  6. front side of 3rd paper: draw a medium sized OBTUSE triangle in the middle of your paper. label it triangle JKL (make angle J the obtuse angle). construct the angle bisector of angle J. construct the angle bisector of anlge K. construct the angle bisector of angle L.
  7. back side of 3rd paper top half: construct a perpendicular through a point ON the line
back side of 3rd paper bottom half: construct a perpendicular through a point NOT on the line
  8. front side of fourth paper top half: draw a medium sized acute triangle. label it MNO. construct medians MP, NQ, OR.
  9. front side of fourth paper bottom half: draw a medium sized obtuse triangle. label it STU (make S the obtuse angle). construct altitudes SV, TW, and UX.
  10. back side of fourth paper top half: draw a medium sized right triangle. label it XYZ. construct the perpendicular bisectors of all 3 sides.
  11. back side of fourth paper bottom half: draw yourself an obtuse angle. now duplicate it.

4.5 Proving Triangles Congruent by ASA, AAS pg. 277

MA.912.G.4.6

  • Aim 1: to use the ASA Postualte to test for congruence
  • Aim 2: to use the AAS Postualte to test for congruence
  • finish the AAS construction. Remember, AAS stands for angle-angle-side. That means you are only allowed to copy 2 angles and a side that is NOT NOT NOT between them! if you copy anything else besides 2 angles and a side NOT NOT NOT NOT between them, you are cheating! here's a hint on how to do it: the sum of all three angles of a triangle is equal to what? a straight line has how many degrees? what is the relationship between the sum of all the angles of a triangle and a straight line?
